The denunciations of Michael Steele are getting louder. So why hasn't he been fired yet? If Barack Obama had made similar unpatriotic comments the Republicans would have been beside themselves with outrage. But instead you have only a few prominent Conservatives denouncing the disgraceful comments of Michael Steele.
This was in the Republican propaganda sheet, NY Post:
U.S. Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.), a Marine combat veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, strongly condemned Steele, saying the chairman’s " irresponsible comments show him to be completely out of touch with the majority of the Republican party.
"Time and again, Steele has demonstrated this disconnect. His comments were not only tactless, but showed an unfortunate level of ignorance on such a significant national security issue.
"The Republican party needs more than just a fundraising figurehead. We need a strong conservative and visionary to help lead us forward. That is the type of leadership Michael Steele is expected to provide,” Hunter said.
"His characterization of the war in Afghanistan was as wrong as it is a disservice to our military men and women."
..."Everyone makes mistakes, but Mr. Steele has failed at virtually all of the tasks expected of him," Christian Whiton, a State Department official in the Bush administration, wrote in an opinion article for FoxNews.com.
"He is gaffe prone, off message, and has repelled rather than attracted RNC donors."
"Former RNC Rival Katon Dawson: Fire Michael Steele"
Katon Dawson, the former South Carolina GOP chairman who narrowly lost the Republican National Committee chairmanship to Michael Steele in January 2009, is now calling for Steele to be fired as RNC chairman in the wake of his comments seemingly opposing the Afghanistan war.
"The RNC should do the responsible thing and show Steele the door," Dawson told CNN. "Enough is enough."
This appeared in the influential right wing blog, RedState:
Disgraceful and embarrassingly inaccurate. What really stands out to me is that it seems Steele wasn’t merely trying to make the ridiculous case that this was Obama’s war, that nobody wants the war to be prosecuted, and that we can’t possibly win the war. No, he was also making the case that our candidates in 2010 should be saying this on the trail. That the RNC would be pushing this as a talking point!! That’s not just grossly misinformed, out of touch, and divorced from reality, it’s dangerously inept and incompetent.
Influential Conservative Republican William Kristol:
William Kristol, editor of the Weekly Standard, called Steele's remarks "an affront, both to the honor of the Republican Party and to the commitment of the soldiers fighting to accomplish the mission they've been asked to take on by our elected leaders."
Congressman Tom Cole and former RNC Chairman:
"Frankly, I find Steele's remarks totally unacceptable," Cole, the former chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee and ex-chief of staff at the RNC, said in a statement to POLITICO. "He should apologize and resign. He undercut American forces fighting in the field, politicized further a war that two presidents of different parties have deemed in the national interest and embarrassed the party he purports to lead. It is time for him to go — quickly."
"It is time for Chairman Steele to step down," said Liz Cheney, chairman of the conservative group Keep America Safe, and daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney.
