The denunciations of Michael Steele are getting louder. So why hasn't he been fired yet? If Barack Obama had made similar unpatriotic comments the Republicans would have been beside themselves with outrage. But instead you have only a few prominent Conservatives denouncing the disgraceful comments of Michael Steele.

This was in the Republican propaganda sheet, NY Post:

U.S. Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.), a Marine combat veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, strongly condemned Steele, saying the chairman’s " irresponsible comments show him to be completely out of touch with the majority of the Republican party.

"Time and again, Steele has demonstrated this disconnect. His comments were not only tactless, but showed an unfortunate level of ignorance on such a significant national security issue.

"The Republican party needs more than just a fundraising figurehead. We need a strong conservative and visionary to help lead us forward. That is the type of leadership Michael Steele is expected to provide,” Hunter said.

"His characterization of the war in Afghanistan was as wrong as it is a disservice to our military men and women."

..."Everyone makes mistakes, but Mr. Steele has failed at virtually all of the tasks expected of him," Christian Whiton, a State Department official in the Bush administration, wrote in an opinion article for FoxNews.com.

"He is gaffe prone, off message, and has repelled rather than attracted RNC donors."

"Former RNC Rival Katon Dawson: Fire Michael Steele"

Katon Dawson, the former South Carolina GOP chairman who narrowly lost the Republican National Committee chairmanship to Michael Steele in January 2009, is now calling for Steele to be fired as RNC chairman in the wake of his comments seemingly opposing the Afghanistan war.

"The RNC should do the responsible thing and show Steele the door," Dawson told CNN. "Enough is enough."

This appeared in the influential right wing blog, RedState:

Disgraceful and embarrassingly inaccurate. What really stands out to me is that it seems Steele wasn’t merely trying to make the ridiculous case that this was Obama’s war, that nobody wants the war to be prosecuted, and that we can’t possibly win the war. No, he was also making the case that our candidates in 2010 should be saying this on the trail. That the RNC would be pushing this as a talking point!! That’s not just grossly misinformed, out of touch, and divorced from reality, it’s dangerously inept and incompetent.

Influential Conservative Republican William Kristol:

William Kristol, editor of the Weekly Standard, called Steele's remarks "an affront, both to the honor of the Republican Party and to the commitment of the soldiers fighting to accomplish the mission they've been asked to take on by our elected leaders."

Congressman Tom Cole and former RNC Chairman:

"Frankly, I find Steele's remarks totally unacceptable," Cole, the former chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee and ex-chief of staff at the RNC, said in a statement to POLITICO. "He should apologize and resign. He undercut American forces fighting in the field, politicized further a war that two presidents of different parties have deemed in the national interest and embarrassed the party he purports to lead. It is time for him to go — quickly."

Liz Cheney:

"It is time for Chairman Steele to step down," said Liz Cheney, chairman of the conservative group Keep America Safe, and daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney.

So Steele should step down? Right after the Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee. You know, the guy who forgot to add income of $500,000 to his taxes for several years. You know, the guy that sets the tax code for the rest of us dummies. What about the Obama appointee to head up the IRS, again, amnesia on his income tax too. By the way, how is that most of the Senators and Congressmen are multi-millionairs? How did Obama make $5 million last year? Put down the kool aid and see the whole picture.

How many of you "left wing, soap box heros" ever served in the armed forces of this great Country which allows your the right to shoot off your mouths and call almost every name in the book? Obviously the Tea Party is having a real impact for you to bash it from your ignorant know it all generation. When I am asked what is the most critical issue facing our Nation I simply answer, "OBAMA and his administration". Of course all of you bleeding heart liberals who have all the answers and no life experience fall all over yourselves defending the direction we are headed. Many of us "Tea Partiers" actively served in our military, as we were asked, defending the way of life and rights of the United States. Shame on all of you who constantly slam the Tea Party. All we want is our Country back. We do not want bills shoved down our throats late at night or on weekends. We want true representation from our elected officials. We believe in "EQUAL" justice, not social justice. We fought for this Country, lost loved ones defending this Country. If you left wing radicals are so unhappy, there are countries you can move to who welcome your socialist, marxist thinking.

The attacks on Steele by Republicans have stepped up (mostly from yesterday's talk shows). But he still hasn't been fired. The reason: Republicans don't want a messy attempt to oust Steele. Apparently the GOP Chairman doesn't want to step down, either. Steele has already said publicly, after similar calls for his resignation after earlier transgressions, that he won't go until he's fired. Republicans are in full damage control mode.

    NY Times:

Senators John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, who serve on the Armed Services Committee, became the latest Republicans to denounce the comments made by Mr. Steele last week at a fund-raising event, where he also said the United States was on the wrong side of history in Afghanistan.

"I think those statements are wildly inaccurate, and there's no excuse for them," Mr. McCain said from Kabul on the ABC News program "This Week." "I believe we have to win here. I believe in freedom. But the fact is that I think that Mr. Steele is going to have to assess as to whether he can still lead the Republican Party."

Doug Heye, a spokesman for the Republican National Committee, declined to comment Sunday. Several party officials said Mr. Steele had spent the weekend calling Republican leaders, including Mr. McCain, to explain his remarks and try to blunt the fallout.

The right wing blogs are pretty quiet:

    1. RedState: Nothing (as of 12 noon)
    2. Ace of Spades: 1 old article (day old); nothing 7/5
    3. HotAir: Extensive coverage (at least 3 articles)
    4. Newsbusters: Nothing. Unless you count 1 article that turned debate around to criticize Cynthia Tucker for her criticism of Steele.

Where's Sarah Palin in all this? And this is someone who's supposed to be a leader in the Republican Party. Although, that hasn't stopped some from speculating that she would succeed Steele as RNC chair. That makes sense. Replace one joke with another.
